The cold rainy weather didn’t stop shoppers on Saturday from waiting hours to get into the highly anticipated Prada sample sale.  But was it worth the wait?  One woman who showed up at 5am and came out with just one item – a pair of purple patent leather boots for $300 – says she thought it was worth the wait.

My friends and I stood in line for two hours on Saturday morning before we finally got in. I was hoping to nab a pair of boots.  But the selection of footwear (shoes $250, exotic skins and boots are between $300-$350) did not speak Prada, at least to me.  So I walked away and headed toward the handbag table.  The choices there weren’t that much better.  This area quickly became mobbed since the staff frequently replenished the table with more bags.  If you waited long enough, you could score a Prada Cervo Antik tote for $1,200 (was $1,895).  That appeared to be one of the highly sought after handbags of the day.  I ran into a former colleague who was leaving the showroom with one.  I also spotted a number of the signature Prada Vela bags (the messenger bag was going for $285).  Other handbags included studded clutch bags for under $1000,  patchwork snakeskin for under $3000, and nylon bags – the signature Prada messenger bag (copies of it can be found all over Chinatown) was going for $285 and nylon totes for under $300.  Women’s wallets ($180) were sold out when I got there.

Prada and Miu Miu dresses range from under $400 for day and up to $1000 for evening.  All the ready-to-wear on Saturday was discounted an extra 30% off.  And at one point in the afternoon, they discounted everything 30% off, except handbags and shoes.  A silk 20s inspired black dress caught my eye $385.  Pants were mostly under $300.  I looked for coats but didn’t see any I liked.  There didn’t appear to be much to choose from.  Not like last year’s sample sale where there was an abundance of great coats and dresses.

The selection in the men’s section was nothing fabulous: Men’s ties are $97 and suit jackets start at $895.  Same disappointment for the accessories.  I considered the Prada cashmere scarves ($100) – available in a variety of colors.  But they were too short for me – the scarf wouldn’t wrap around my neck.  Cashmere socks were $35, leather belts $75 and chain necklaces $75.
