Bargain hunters looking for post Christmas sales have quite a number of retailers to choose from… this season, Larry Label Whore found the best deals at Saks Fifth Avenue. Yesterday (Wednesday), he headed straight for the flagship store in New York City during its morning deal rush. Here’s his report:
Usually, the day after Christmas brings many sales, but this year the only major retailer having a good sale was Saks so I headed over to the main location on Fifth Avenue. Last year, the deal for men’s items was 70% off the original price (plus an extra 10% off if you use your Saks card). This year, the deal was 60% off the original price for men’s and 70% off women’s merchandise until Noon on Wednesday.
I started at the shoe department which is always the most popular. There were many designer shoes on offer including Prada, Bally, Gucci, and Ferragamo. At 60% off, they were still expensive, but there were these Ferragamo sandals I have been eyeing for a while that I couldn’t pass up. They were down from $310 to $124. The biggest steal of the sale was shoes left over from last season’s sale. I spotted a pair of Harry’s of London Sandals and Ferragamo boots at for 80% off each. The sandals were $79 down from $395 and the boots were $56 from $280.
Next, I headed over to designer clothes to check out any good deals. The floor where a lot of the clothes were consolidated was a mad house. I didn’t even bother going through it. I instead stuck to the floor with Gucci, Dior, and other top designers. At 50% off for Gucci and 60% at Dior, the prices were still way too high so I didn’t even bother. However, I did spot a beautiful Costume National tote bag for $400 down from $1000, but after much deliberation I decided it was still too high for me.
I, then, stopped in Banana Republic, which was across the street, to check out their 50% off of reduced items sale. Disappointing prices… since most of the reduced items were the first markdowns. Anyone who is a big BR shopper like me knows they reduce the items many times with discounts of up to 40% off even after that. My advice is to wait for those sales.
I didn’t bother going to the other department stores because there weren’t any special day after Christmas sales, even at Macy’s where I thought would be the best deals. It seems to me that last week’s big Macy’s sale was the time to go where I picked up an amazing Polo Ralph Lauren shawl-collar sweater for $35 down from $145. On a side note, Bloomingdale’s had 75% off women’s sale shoes. My mother picked up a beautiful pair of See by Chloe booties for $36 down from $350.
All in all, I was disappointed by the day after Christmas sales, except the men’s shoe selection at Saks. For those disappointed they missed it, there’s another opportunity on New Year’s Day for the same sale. However, I am pretty sure the stuff will be the same as this sale (no new merchandise) and very much picked over.
I hope everyone’s holiday was filled with joy and happiness! Now, onto a great New Year!
