Even though there’s still plenty of summer left, department stores are already looking ahead to the fall. Spring/summer merchandise is now deeply discounted. If you have the time and the patience to rummage through the goods, you can find some great deals. Larry Label Whore checked out a couple of New York City’s high-end department stores.
“I love love love the end of season sales especially on high-end designer merch. Last week, I checked out the Saks consolidation sale for a second time and was bummed by the selection. I needed a pick-me-up so I stopped by Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys to check out their up to 75% off sales.
First stop, Bergdorf Goodman and was initially perplexed because the first two floors said 50% off on brands such as Tom Ford and Loro Piana as well as shoes. I then went to third floor and found the end of season 75% off markdowns. The sale started last Thursday so by now it was heavily picked over. They had buttoned-down shirts and sweaters from Gucci, Prada, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry Prorsum, and an UGLY Lanvin shirt.
Most will set you back at least $100 for shirts and $200 for sweaters even after the discount. They had some pants and jackets left over, but nothing special. I ended up buying a Burberry Prorsum Made in Italy bathing suit with a special print they had this season. It went from $295 down to $69. I, unfortunately, missed the Saint Laurent when it was discounted.
I next stopped in to the Barneys sale before they sent out the merch to the outlets and warehouse sale. The main floor is mostly accessories, but there wasn’t anything I was interested there. The second floor is where it gets good. You’ll find top of the line designers like Gucci, Bottega Venetta, Fendi, Belstaff, and Prada for 75% off. There was a lot purchased already, but I still found a good selection from each designer except Fendi. Definitely more than what Bergdorf had. The third floor had brands like Burberry Prorsum, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Jil Sander, Comme des Garcons, and Lanvin for 70% off. They also had a good selection of items, but 70% off is still not enough of a discount for me.
The next few floors had various discounts most up to 60% off. Those designers included Ralph Lauren, Armani Collezioni, BASCO, and Marc by Marc Jacobs. I picked up a Marc by Marc Jacobs blue polo shirt for $49 from $128, which wasn’t a little much since I got one for $16 a few weeks ago at Bloomingdale’s, but I really liked it. They also had a few rows of discounted shoes, but the selection wasn’t good as well as the prices. There were three pairs of men’s Louboutins on sale, but they were high heel boots so they looked more like women’s shoes.
All in all, I was satisfied with the damage I had done. Stop in to the stores to check out the goods for yourself. The selection is better at Barneys, but both are worth a look.
PS – Also yesterday, I did a quick run-through at my favorite department store Bloomingdale’s and low and behold I found another Michael Kors half-zip pullover…this time in white for $5.50. It now joins my red and blue ones I bought previously for $3.40 each!”
