Colico Sample Sale in NYC

Through Sunday, Coclico, is hosting a sample sale in Nolita… Once again, our roving sale reviewer, Fashionable Femme Jen, wandered in. These stylish and comfortable shoes are designed in New York and made in Spain. Jen reports of a great selection of footwear and more with bargains that aren’t amazing but still well worth it:

Walking into the Coclico sample sale likens being devoured by the sassy shoe monster. Behind the bright white sample sale tape is a dimly lit space downstairs that’s devoted to quite a large assortment of shoes, with some clothes and bags thrown in. Boxes and boxes of footwear (shoes, sandals and boots) line the right perimeter of the store, includes other brands such as Rachel Comey. Against the left, a row of boots in varying heights rest on a cabinet where shoes are also on display by size (35-39).  A rolling rack of clothing runs down the middle of the store, leading shoppers to the back where bins of accessories and a final selection of shoes are strewn about the floor.

Signage with color-coordinated pricing is posted throughout the store. Shoe boxes and price tags are marked with colored stickers. Pricing starts at $99, increases to $150 and $189, and caps off at $220. There is a 15% discount for buying multiple pairs. Accessories (i.e. tights and small wallets/pouches) are $20.  An excellent selection of Follis leather handbags including the lace Julia tote for $150 (orig. $330) and Muse Tote for $150 (orig. $325) hang behind a mountain of shoes. The clothing, at $50 and up, includes brands like Obakki and Mes demoiselles.

Stand outs for me are the Chie Mihara Verve Purple for $189 ($290 online sale price), Fredy Esmeralda for $189 ($295 online sale price), and Vigor Esmeralda $189 ($290 online sale price). The Coclico Teo in Poppy, Coconut and Maize is $220 ($290 online sale price) and the Argila A860 Topo for $189 ($311 online sale price) are also on hand with a mix of sizing options. Overall, there is a substantial spread of sizes from 35 to 39, with fewer 37/37.5’s and more 39’s. The main attraction at this sale is retro chic/casual couture sandals.

Along with salty snacks, shoes are most definitely a considerable weakness for me. Unfortunately, “cute” and “comfort” often exist independently—heel length and time determine which shoes I walk around town in and which I’d wear out or at the office. At the Coclico sale, many of the shoes were stylish, yet very “walkable.”  Though the sample sale pricing is a little higher than I’d prefer, the cost here is the means to a pair of shoes where cute isn’t sacrificed for comfort. While I wouldn’t consider this a “stock up” sale, it definitely offers the opportunity to afford a pair of stylish, yet comfy shoes to prance around in for the remainder of the summer.
