The online version of the Barneys Warehouse Sale is now over and shoppers will have to make their way to West 17th Street in Chelsea where the legendary event started this morning and will go through Labor Day. Many of us have been wondering about selection and markdowns. Like most women, the first place I always check out at this sale is the shoe department.

I made my way there around 10am this morning to find, as expected, no line. I breezed in with my small handbag which I didn’t need to check in. This time, the footwear selection appeared to be smaller. The place was manageable. Unlike previous sales, it wasn’t a madhouse this time around. As usual, the women’s merchandise can be found on the main floor. The shoe racks were organized in one section by size (6-10). Since there wasn’t as much merchandise, there was more room for mirrors and benches for trying on shoes.

The discount for footwear seemed to be around 60% off retail, some pairs were discounted a lot less than that. Disappointing since I was hoping for more of a markdown. This was the same discount at the flagship store on Madison Avenue at the end of the season sale. You were better off getting deals online at this point. As for the selection, I spotted a number of platforms, heels, slingbacks, sandals and flats. They include a pair of Miu Miu platforms going for $279 (was $690), Lanvin 6″ platforms for $619 (was $1,550), Stella McCartney patent leather heels for $339 (was $845), Prada slingbacks at $449 (was $890), Nicholas Kirkwood gold platform heels at $519 (was $860), Marc Jacobs sandals at $339 (was $840), Ann Demeulemeester strappy platforms for $649 ($1,630), Walter Steiger platform heels in a number of sizes tagged at $429 (was $1,075). I also spotted a handful of Christian Louboutin platforms – an embellished pair was going for $1,119 (was $2,795). Not surprising were the repeats from previous season’s such as a pair of Maison Martin Margiela heels at $389 (was $965). I spotted this same style shoe at the end of last season’s sale going for less than $150. For the woman who’s into avant-garde, there were a pair of Junya Watanabe black biker boots at $549 (was $1,375). Not all the choices were heels or platforms… there were also flat sandals such as a pair of Phillip Lims for $189 (was $470) and canvas flat Margielas for $249 (was $615).

If the list above is still too pricey for you, they were a number of Barneys Coop footwear scattered about on the racks – a pair of patent leather flats were $99 (ws $250) and a pair of Barney’s patent leather platforms for $170 (was $225). And sneakers too! New Balances for $79 (was $160).

Right next to the handbags were a selection of damaged shoes. I looked and was shocked that they were even trying to sell some of them such as a pair of Chloe platforms missing its slingbacks priced at $259 (was $645). I did check out women’s designer apparel. In a word, disappointing and very diminished. I’ll have a review on that later…
