A few notable sample sales this week in New York City… The first is Heike Jarick’s sample sale where pieces from the spring/summer collection are up to 85% off retail. The German born designer is known for her unusual and luxurious fabric choices.
The two-day sample sale by Twinkle by Wenlan and fellow contemporary designers Hunter Dixon, by Smith and Pinkyotto kicks off this morning. I popped into the Garment District showroom yesterday to check out the goods. Here you’ll find designer Wenlan Chai’s signature whimsical and fun dresses as well as separates in a range of sizes (lots of size 2s). The other designer’s pieces seem to complement Twinkle.
This week, Twinkle by Wenlan opens its Garment District showroom to the public for a sample sale with fellow designers (Hunter Dixon, By Smith and Pinkyotto). Deals will be up to 75% off the retail price. Here’s example of pricing for pieces on sale: silk printed dresses for $120 (were $326); color-blocking maxi dresses for $80 (reduced from $154); black and white eyelet cut out dress at $130 (regularly $295) and weekend dresses now $98 (were $278).
The selection at the Twinkle by Wenlan sample sale was so-so. Not as much merchandise compared to the sale back in the fall. The items I’m told are actual samples and overstock. There were dresses, shorts, skirts, tops and a few winter pieces (jackets and wool pants) mixed in. Prices aren’t bad. Almost everything is under $100. That means – tops under $70, basic dresses under $90 (although I noticed a few of the more elaborate ones at $120). There were also some rock bottom deals such as a selection of blouses, pants and shorts for $30 and under. A box of belts were $10, necklaces at $15 and leather strap bracelets at $5. I noticed mostly sizes 2s and 4s with some 6s and 8s to be had. The merchandise is organized on racks by size. While the selection was already dwindling on this first day, I’m told that no more new stock will be put out. What’s out is what’s on offer. Sale ends Friday.
The after work crowd flocked over to the Twinkle by Wenlan sale in the Garment District Wednesday night. When I got there, the place was fairly packed. Like me, these women must have read Racked’s review of the sale which stated that “most pieces cost under $100.” It was true. Deals on dresses at $65, silk and knit tops, skirts and pants ranging from $45 to $55. The only problem was that the merchandise was thinning out fairly quickly, especially for the samples which were less expensive. Also on offer were higher priced items; dresses from $125 to $180. I spotted two wool coats for $160.
Most of the women were gathered in a corner of the room disrobing to try on the merchandise. From what I saw, the makeshift dressing area was where all the clothing ended up. The racks were picked over. But if you looked hard enough, which I did, you’ll find some worthwhile items. I bought two skirts for $45 each. Sizes were limited; mostly 2s and 4s were available and a few 6s. Accessories (belts, necklaces and bracelets) were going from $5 to $55 dollars.
