When we walked into the Creatures of Comfort sale near Little Italy yesterday, the sale had just been underway a few hours. We were surprised to see the dark space on Centre Street a mess. It looked like a tornado had hit the place.
Slim Pickings at the Rachel Comey Sample Sale

The Rachel Comey sale is once again being held at a Nolita school gym. The markdown is up to 60% off retail on men’s and women’s apparel and accessories. Fashionable Femme Jen had intended to stop into Creatures of Comfort at first but the line outside put her off so she checked out the sale at Rachel Comey where she didn’t find much! Here’s her report:
The good news is that there is no line at the Rachel Comey sale around noon when I waltz in. Unfortunately, the selection boasts slim pickins! Along the wall of the gymnasium where the sample sale is being held, shoes are $100 each or 3 for $250. There are mostly sandals of the same style (in beige, tan and black) with the bulk of the sizing between 7 and 9. Down the middle, a table of shoes for each size from 7 to 9.5 are available. Once again, there are only a handful of pairs of shoes on each table. The only pair I find mildly appealing are a pair of beige suede heels with a wing tip look and peep toe front.

Through Sunday, Coclico, is hosting a sample sale in Nolita… Once again, our roving sale reviewer, Fashionable Femme Jen, wandered in. These stylish and comfortable shoes are designed in New York and made in Spain. Jen reports of a great selection of footwear and more with bargains that aren’t amazing but still well worth it:
Walking into the Coclico sample sale likens being devoured by the sassy shoe monster. Behind the bright white sample sale tape is a dimly lit space downstairs that’s devoted to quite a large assortment of shoes, with some clothes and bags thrown in. Boxes and boxes of footwear (shoes, sandals and boots) line the right perimeter of the store, includes other brands such as Rachel Comey. Against the left, a row of boots in varying heights rest on a cabinet where shoes are also on display by size (35-39). A rolling rack of clothing runs down the middle of the store, leading shoppers to the back where bins of accessories and a final selection of shoes are strewn about the floor.
Rachel Comey’s Sample Sale is Held Inside a Gym

It’s a bit unorthodox to have a sample sale inside a church gymnasium. But that’s where the Rachel Comey sale is being held through Friday inside the St. Patricks Cathedral gym in Nolita. I thought the space looked odd especially since they didn’t have enough merchandise to fill it.
Yesterday, I stopped in for the sale preview… You won’t find any sweaty socks or jockstraps here. What you’ll find are rows and rows of boxes filled with Comey’s well-crafted shoes (made in South America) which are a big draw. The best deals are shoes displayed on the floor by size which are going for $100/pair or 3 for $250. Some of these looked like samples and others looked the worse for wear. If you can’t find anything here, just turn around and you’ll see plenty of footwear inside boxes stacked in the middle of the room. They’re organized by style: sandals/Oxfords are $190, wedges/heels $215 and boots are $200.

Jumelle Sample Sale

Yesterday, I happen to be in Williamsburg so I made a quick stop into the boutique, Jumelle, on Bedford Avenue. Through tomorrow (Sunday), the shop is holding its annual sample sale. While this is called a “sample sale”… the offerings are mostly production pieces (overstock). Regardless of that fact, there were some great finds.
