Mikimoto opened its first freestanding store on Fifth Avenue back in 1975. Over the weekend, the Japanese brand known for its stunning cultured pearls closed the store.

A few sales worth nothing for this week… Take a look:
Tomorrow, there are deals to be had on fine quality cultured pearls from jewelry brand Mikimoto at their semi-annual sale. The markdown at last June’s sale was 50% to 75% off original retail prices. Expect the label’s main line to be half off the original price. Blue Lagoon will be more of a discount. Where/When: 680 Fifth Avenue (b/w 53rd & 54th Sts), 4th Floor, NY, NY; Jan 16-18; Wed (11am-7pm), Thurs (10am-7pm), Fri (10am-7pm).

I finally made it to the Mikimoto sale today… just stopped in briefly to see the offerings which were fairly standard and similar to past sales. The main collection items can be found in glass cases on one side and Blue Lagoon on the other. The discount is from 50% to 75% off retail. Not much caught my eye except for a stunning Mikimoto white South Sea strand with substantial pearls at 11.5mm priced at $17,000 (retailed for $34,000).

On Wednesday… Mikimoto (fine quality pearls) is hosting its semi-annual sale. While this is being pegged as an “employee” sale, it’s open to the public (as long as you know about it). In the past, we’ve covered the Japanese label’s sales and we’ve found strands of pearls from $8,000 to $16,000. Also available are bracelets, earrings, rings and more.

Wednesday afternoon, a line had formed in the hallway outside the Mikimoto Fifth Avenue showroom. A group of women (including one who was wearing a kimono) patiently waited to have a look at the offerings inside. After about half-an-hour, we were all inside.

Mikimoto is hosting a sale this week in Midtown. The last sale took place just earlier this year at the Mikimoto showroom on Fifth Avenue – a tiny room that quickly became so crowded making it difficult to get a good look at the jewels. This time around, Soiffer Haskin offers a much larger space (maybe a bit too large). When we walked in over the weekend, the glass display cases seemed out of place in the massive room.
