The madness began today at the semi-annual Barneys Warehouse Sale in Chelsea. While it’s best to wait until the last week for the best deals, die-hard shoppers were lined up at the crack of dawn. I made it inside around 10am this morning. My intention was to survey the merchandise and to see if there were any gems. Check out the video of the shoes and handbags…
Before the doors opened this morning for IF Boutique‘s sample sale, a line snaked around the corner of Grand Street. Once everyone was ushered into the basement level, which is where the sale was taking place, it was a mad dash for bargains. Many of the shoppers this morning knew what they were looking for (many appeared to be customers of the store and thus were clued in on the merchandise). Some headed straight for the Ann Demeulemeester rack, some looking for Maison Martin Margiela, while others were on the hunt for the Ivan Grundahl (the label with the most selection and better prices).
The Brooklyn boutique chain Bird is now offering up to 60 percent off its current spring/summer merchandise. I stopped into the Park Slope store earlier this week to find tons of stuff.
The Comme des Garçons sale way west of Times Square got underway yesterday and from reports by blogs such as Racked, the Croatian Church where it is being held was stuffed with the label’s avant-garde, cutting-edge clothing and accessories for both men and women. There’s a large selection of vintage that has been kept over the years from its numerous collections and collaborations. The sale price for most things reportedly aren’t cheap but many of the pieces are collectibles. Items from almost all of Comme des Garçons associated brands, including Junya Watanabe and Tao, are 70-percent off their retail price.
While I didn’t get a chance to stop in today, Sample Sale Diva made it inside after a wait in line. She managed to snag some photos and give us her findings on the sale:
…got to the sale around 3pm and I almost left when I saw the line (I really don’t do lines) but I decided to stay and finally got in. The church was a strange venue to have a sale… It was a very big room and lots of stuff, many were too weird for my taste. I spotted Junya Wantanabe, Tao and CDG. With the discount, the cheapest item I saw was $50. Most T-shirts had a price tag of $120 so the average tee was $36. There interesting stuff such as jackets that were going for about $500. With so much stuff I didn’t know where to start. I walked around aimlessly before figuring out what I wanted to focus on. I managed to get a heart with eyes T-shirt ($36), a big Comme bag for $138 and a checkered jacket from two seasons past for $149. I really had to dig to finally find the things I ended up walking out with.
The latest markdowns at the Barneys Warehouse Sale brought out the crowds over the weekend to Chelsea. Women’s designer, shoes, lingerie and swimwear are now an additional 25 percent off the sale price. The gents are getting a better deal with the discount now at an extra 40 percent off designer duds, sportswear, outerwear (including leather). Men’s sportscoats, tuxedos and ties are at an additional 25 percent off. We stopped in on Saturday to find no line but a very crowded scene inside… with shoppers pawing through the racks and shoe stacks. The sale ends on Sunday… expect even more reductions.
The IF Boutique in Soho known for its unparalleled collection of avant-garde clothing for both men and women is holding a sale this week offering up to 70 percent off fall/winter current and past season merchandise.
Barneys Warehouse Sale began offering further discounts Monday. I popped in last night to see what was left after the weekend. It appears they’ve added more high-end RTW designer goods (a long rack in the middle of the main women’s floor has now been set aside for designers such as Lanvin and Stella McCartney). An additional 25 percent off designer items stamped with a”Red Star.” As with previous sales, look for the red stamp on the tag to get the discount. Sale organizers are also giving an additional 35 percent off WHSE stamped items on designer clothing and shoes with a “Blue” stamp. But good luck finding any blue stamps on shoes. I spent some time looking for the rare stamp and only found a few not-so-great CO-OP sandals. As for menswear, take an additional 25 percent off men’s casual pants and white tag casual jackets. There will certainly be further discounts – when they start slashing further depends on how much merchandise they sell.
The Barneys Warehouse Sale is undeniably one of the biggest sales in New York City. It’s always mobbed, especially on the first day. This season was no different as Racked reported this morning while line blogging with the early birds standing in line an hour before the doors opened. I showed up before 10am to find no line. However, the scene inside was madness. No surprise that the women’s shoe section was crowded.
Women shoes can be found in the same place as usual right when you walk in. This time, sale organizers are offering an additional 25 percent off items with the “BLUE” stamp. I spotted a few shoes with the blue stamp, including a Marc Jacobs pump that was already on sale for under $150. I was told that those items are from previous seasons which is why there’s an extra discount. As for the selection in footwear, as usual plenty of designer sandals and heels with a smattering of boots. I spotted a pair of Balenciaga super high heeled gladiators for $500 (my friend picked up the same pair during last winter’s sale for $150). I also saw a few Lanvin pumps from two seasons ago going for $400. There’s a few Loub flat sandals, wedges and heels, Lanvin cut-out slingbacks, Prada wedges, sandals and heels, Chloe, Costume National, Pierre Hardy, Rochas, Robert Clergerie, Stella McCartney, and more. There’s a lot of product and you have to spend the time to really look.
Soho’s IF Boutique that carries high-end avant-garde labels such as Ann Demeulemeester, Comme des Garçons, Carpe Diem, Dries Van Noten, Junya Watanabe, Maison Martin Margiela is hosting a sale this week offering deals at 70 to 85 percent off on clothing for both men and women.

I took a second look Thursday night at women’s wear at the Barneys Warehouse Sale and I put together the video above. Like the men’s section, I was disappointed. I had to look hard to find the stand out deals: plush cashmere shawls (in taupe and black) by Giorgio Armani tagged at $200, Lanvin black dress $300, Dries Van Noten snakeskin print cashmere sweaters $180 to $225, Marc by Marc Jacobs black cropped jacket $150, Alexander Wang knits starting at $49. I did find these bargains but I really had to dig deep. None of the shoes or boots really stood out, at least in my size (37). That said… a pair of blue suede Balenciaga ultra high heels (tagged at $450) did catch my eye. I spotted that those Lanvin platforms ($450) that were on offer in the last sale over the summer sitting on the shelves. I was surprised at the lack of selection of boots.
