It’s a rare occurrence for Roberto Cavalli to hold a sample sale.  Apparently, the Italian designer’s last official sample sale was three years ago.  Monday night, a few shoppers were at the Altman building in Chelsea browsing the racks.  The brand’s ready-to-wear and couture collections are discounted at up to 80% off the regular price. But even on sale, most items were still pricey.  The couture collection caught my eye.  I spotted some gorgeous gowns there that sold for thousands of dollars at retail – now on sale for not much less than $800.  The dresses and skirts that I liked were on sale for $380.  You won’t find any serious deals here.

A Sally reader who also stopped by the sale reports:   “the Cavalli sale may be the most expensive sample sale I’ve ever gone to if for no other reason than there was no clothing there AT ALL under $100… Every skimpy little summer top I picked up was originally $1,200. So (on sale for) over $230!”

Cavalli is famous for his over-the-top sexy clothes.  And there was certainly plenty of that and plenty of color.  The ready-to-wear merchandise was not very exciting.  Nothing jumped at me.  You really had to sift through the merchandise to find some nice pieces.  As for footwear, the choices were limited.  I did spot a few pairs of marginally tasteful shoes priced under $200.  The handbags were not worth a second look.
