The Sferra sale in the Chelsea Market was doing a brisk business with the after work crowd on Wednesday. Many of the customers here were clearly after the quality sheets, which ranged from twin to king sets. When I walked in, the middle of the space was crowded as customers looked through the choices – lots of basics; solids and patterns. While there appeared to be more styles available for those with queen-sized beds, the selection was still pretty good for the other sizes.
Pricing is not bad, starting at $65 for basic queen sets (200-thread count) to $170 (orig $519) for fun colorful solids (burnt orange, bright red, bright blue to name a few). I found a great deal (just $75) on a striped damask set (600-thread count), made in Portugal. Besides sheets, there were other linens on offer such as down duvets ($130/twin, $160/queen and $195/king), shiny satin comforters in autumn colors (rust, burgundy, gold) were found in one corner; the queen was priced at $300. Down pillows were in the back (starting at $50), decorative pillows were along a wall on shelves (striped linen for $29, silk embroidery at $49). Quilt sets were going for $242 (orig. $545). Another popular seller were towels (bath at $14, hand towels $6) and bath robes for $49. Miscellaneous items such as cashmere scarves ($55) and cashmere gloves ($30-$35) were also on sale.
Just on the first day, the merchandise was already thinning out and staffers had to go in the back to restock the sales floor. As I wondered whether organizers would have enough stock to sell, I overheard a woman say to her friend – OMG! This is the first day and they’re running out of stuff. I asked the cashier if they had enough stock… she didn’t seem worried and assured me they had plenty of merchandise through Sunday.
