Best Buy at Barbara Bui

As I’ve said before in this blog, I’m a big fan of French designer Barbara Bui‘s cool, classic and clean pieces.  I’m hooked on her pants (the fit is perfect) and I love her tailored jackets but the four figure price tag is too much for me.  So when she holds a sale, I try to make it.  For just two days (sale ends Friday), Bui has marked down her spring/summer 2010 collection (including shoes and handbags) 70 percent off the retail price.

When I stopped in late yesterday, the boutique on Wooster Street looked sparse.  Some shelves were bare.  A staffer told me that a lot of shoppers had already come in throughout the day and picked through the racks. As a result, many of the smaller sizes had been snapped up.  A disappointment for me since I spotted a few knit tops ($100), pants ($150+) and tanks ($50) that I really liked.  But my size was not available.  A pair of ballet flats in metallic blue ($120) also caught my eye.  But once again, not available in my size.  A few large handbags were left (mostly black for $600) and a couple of small shoulder bags for about $200.  There were still a few things on offer such as jackets for $400+, dresses $300+, pants for $150+ and more, including a limited selection of heels and platforms for around $250.

J.Crew Sample Sale Again… Too Much of a Good Thing?

Yet another J.Crew sample sale is being held at Clothingline in the Garment District.  There have been so many in the past months that I can no longer keep track.  Our sale shopping pal, Artsy Anna, stopped into the space this afternoon to scope out the scene.  Anna did not find the deals or the offerings enticing at all.  Here’s what she had to say:

I left empty handed and uninspired.   There was a time when I couldn’t imagine thinking those words for I’ve been a J.Crew customer for almost 15 years.  I recall one J.Crew warehouse sale back in 2002 where I bought enough to fill 6 heaping shopping bags.  I was excited when J.Crew had their first New York sale last year.  But now, I’m tired of it–tired of the same merchandise at mediocre markdowns season after season.   I’m beginning to get fed up with Clothingline’s terrible service and ridiculously rigid policies.  And I’m not alone.  Today’s turnout may be a sign that other shoppers have had enough of the J Crew x Clothingline collab.   Usually, I find a healthy crowd during the after work rush. But not today–unlike recent sales, there were absolutely no lines; not for entry, bag check or cash registers.

Mackage, Soia & Kyo, Candela NYC Sample Sale

It was really warm and stuffy in the Mackage showroom in the Garment District when I stopped in Monday evening to check out the coats.  The space wasn’t crowded – a smattering of shoppers were browsing the racks.  A few of them tried on some of the wool coats despite the heat.  With today’s projected forecast at 85-degrees, let’s hope they turn on the air conditioner.  If  you’re looking for a winter or leather coat, you’ll find quite a few choices here.  Let’s start with the Mackage raincoats:  short nylon coats are $115; the full length ones are $135.  The Mackage leather coats hover in price between $300 to $350, depending on style and length.  Mackage winter coats made of wool were going for under $300.  Soia & Kyo coats were under $300 for leather.

In the same showroom, I found more warm-weather appropriate clothing in the Candela NYC section.  Here you’ll find feminine tops and dresses – for day and evening.  Many of the pieces are accented with lace or embellished with beading.  A lace mini dress caught my eye as well as a lace top ($50 each).  There was also khaki and black canvas stud jackets ($100).  A limited selection of strappy sandals and shoes were up for grabs for $100.  The leather belts (made in Argentina) were a steal for $20.  The showroom’s sale ends today at 7pm.  It’s CASH only.

Hermès Fans Continue to Queue up for Deals at the French label’s Spring Sale…

I decided to skip Wednesday’s monster Hermès line that snaked around the block in Chelsea.  Many shoppers had to wait two-and-a-half hours to get in, as Racked reported.  Thursday after work was a breeze.  There was a short line outside the Metropolitan Pavilion.  Security guards were handing out yellow cards [...]

Filene’s Basement Closing Sale: Any worthwhile deals left?

Madison Avenue Spy reported last week that the Filene’s Basement in Chelsea was closing, pointing out that the merchandise was lackluster and that anyone going there would have to invest in the time to dig through the merchandise to find gems.  Sample Sally contributor, Artsy Anna, was up to the challenge, stopping in Monday night.  Here’s her report:

Everything is an extra 50-90% off, with most in the 60% range.  Selection leaves something to be desired but if you’re a hunter, this is a sale you shouldn’t skip.  Most of what I saw was designer diffusion, bridge, and ladies’ better sportswear (labels like Michael Michael Kors, Elie Tahari, Liz Claiborne, Jones New York, ABS, BCBG, Kenneth Cole, and Theory).  Much of the merchandise is shopworn but there are some deals if you’re patient and savvy.  I found a great metallic jacquard skirt for $7.99 and a private label cashmere cardigan for $12.  Deals worth considering are Theory cropped cotton pants (I saw sizes 4, 10 and 12) and a few autumn cashmere sweaters and wraps.

One of the upsides to the sale is that you can try on clothes (over your clothing, of course) right on the sales floor.  You may have to search out a mirror and share with fellow customers but for anyone who’s been inside a filthy Filene’s Basement dressing room, waiting for mirror time is a sacrifice worth making.

Plenty of Deals at Phi’s Farewell Sale
