I was skeptical about this week’s Escada sample sale after disappointing finds at the German brand’s previous sample sales. But when a friend tipped me off on her finds ($20 for a jacket that was originally $1,700, $20 for a dress that was $1,600 and $20 for a blouse that retailed at $210), I thought I should check it out. I stopped in Tuesday night. All the merchandise was 80 to 95 percent off the original retail price. There were still plenty of jackets, trousers, dresses and blouses in all sizes. I spotted jackets going for $250 to $300. Trousers on sale for under $100. Dresses for $200. The goods are separated by size on racks. There was a sample section (Italian size 36 and 38) for 80 percent off. Also on offer were cashmere sweaters for under $100 which were placed on a table in the middle of the room. My friend found her deals on the $20 damaged and slightly damaged racks. Tuesday night, those racks were picked over with mostly badly damaged items left. I did find one 3/4 sleeved cotton striped sweater in good condition for $20 (was $850). All belts were $20. I found a nice basic black one with a gold buckle. There were only a handful of heels left. No more handbags. A customer asked a sale organizer if they were dropping prices further on the last day (Wednesday). He insisted they were not going to do that. But with all this merchandise, I wonder…
