While the Barneys Warehouse Sale was well underway in Chelsea yesterday, another sale downtown was taking place in a much more chill atmosphere and with soothing Hawaiian music playing in the background. The Aloha Rag Warehouse Sale is being held inside a warehouse a couple of blocks north of the boutique on Greenwich Street. While the outside and stairwell looked industrial, the actual space was large, airy and bright.
The store carries timeless classics by high end designers. At this sale, I spotted pieces from Alaia, Celine, Martin Margiela, Thomas Wylde, Ann Demeulemeester, Lanvin, Rick Owens and more (current spring/summer collection as well as a few pieces from previous seasons). You’ll find better deals here than at the Barneys Warehouse Sale. The discount is up to 80-percent off retail and I actually found quite a number of items marked down at that level or at 75% off. There was a better selection for the ladies than the gents who had just several racks of clothing and a few pairs of shoes to choose from.
Many of the shoppers here were clearly regulars at the boutique. The merchandise neatly hung on racks along the wall. The rack of Alaia pieces really caught my eye such as an Alaia cropped navy wool peacoat now at $1,063 (was $4,250) and a simple Alaia cashmere navy sweater designed with a scalloped neck is now going for $271 (was $1,085). There was a really quirky Thomas Wylde leather jacket for $490 (was $2,450). Also a Celine black crepe blazer at $588 (was $2,350) and matching pants for $300, a Martin Margiela black dress for $336 (was $1,680), and a Martin Margiela sleeveless chunky sweater vest for $148 (was $740) – one of the items on this list that was actually affordable. I also saw a cashmere Rick Owens sleeveless hoodie for $191 (was $765).
If this is beyond your budget, there were other items, especially from the house brand, AR, that weren’t too expensive such as a cute pair of dark blue heavy cotton cropped pants for $70 and a blazer for $161 (was $645). Also, perfect for fall AR cropped biker jackets at $180 and $275 (were $1,000).
On a table in the middle of the room were lots of denim for both men and women. The shoes (selection was limited) were displayed in one corner and pricing was actually pretty good. I spotted a pair of Margiela flats for $119 (was $595), Margiela heels at $152 (was $780). Plus, a few fun and funky Nicholas Kirkwood heels for under $200. Great deals for shoes but sizing was spotty.
Near the cash registers are accessories, including vintage Chanel jewelry (earrings, necklaces, etc) that were displayed inside a glass case. The discount was at 50% off retail. That translated to $900 for a pair of clip-on earrings.
The only annoyance was the makeshift dressing room – just one and it was a freight elevator. The line was long for try-ons since they were only letting in one person at a time. That said, I have to say: Mahalo… thanks to the staff here. After spending nearly two hours at the Barneys Warehouse Sale, I’m grateful for a much nicer shopping experience.
Where/When: 545 Greenwich St. 2nd Floor, (b/t Vandam & Charlton Sts.). Thru August 25th, Daily (Noon-6p).
