As in the past, Larry Label Whore has our review of the after Christmas sales of high-end department stores in New York City. While this isn’t the final markdown, Larry gives us an idea of what’s out there:
“It’s coming up to my favorite time of year – the end of season sales at the department stores! Usually around New Year’s time, the major high-end stores have their lowest markdown, which is usually 70-75% off retail. The best time to get a glimpse of the clothes that will be on offer is to check out the day after Christmas sale in each store. This season, I was pretty disappointed.
My first stop: Saks‘ Fifth Avenue Flagship. That’s because they were advertising an extra 50% off the markdown price till 12pm. I was disappointed to find out when I go to the store that it didn’t equal to the 70% off I was expecting, but 65% off instead. 5% can make a difference when you’re dealing with clothes that retail in the hundreds and thousands of dollars.
Shoes were all up to 65% off retail and included the usual suspects like Ferragamo, To Boot, Bally, Giuseppe Zanotti, etc… Most clothes were 65% off, except for a couple brands like Armani and Vince which went to up to 70% off. There were some gems mixed in that I found including Burberry ties that were $190, but went down to $38 – an 80% discount most likely due to it being from the season before. Other than that the selection wasn’t anything to write home about.
Next up, Bergdorf Goodman since they advertised an extra 25% off their already 60% off sale which equaled to 70% off retail. Definitely worth checking out before they do their final markdown to 75% off. Quite a few high-end brands were there like Prada, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and Givenchy. Much better than the Saks discount. The only thing that caught my eye was a plaid front McQueen zip-up wool sweater with a star applique. It was down to $225 from $750. Shoes were not a great selection and only went down 50%.
I skipped Barney’s because I didn’t think their 60% off plus an extra 10% off sale was worth checking out before their 75% off final markdown so I headed to my last stop, Bloomingdale’s. They advertised an extra 25% off already reduced sale items until 1p as their “doorbuster,” but when I got there brands like Burberry and Ferragamo were excluded from the extra discount. However, one of my sleeper brands, Pringle of Scotland, was 60% off retail plus the 25% off discount. Brands like McQ were also part of the deal, but unfortunately Commes des Garcon’s Play was still regular price. I bought a discounted Burberry check shirt in the end, but it wasn’t as good of a deal as I had hoped – $118 from $350.
That was my day after Christmas shopping. I had some extra money to burn because I won my work fantasy football league. Next up are the 75% off markdowns, especially at Barney’s which I can’t wait for. Happy Shopping!” -Larry Label Whore
