Tipster Review of the DVF Sample Sale…

Many shoppers who weren’t on the friends & family list at the DVF sample sale tried their luck yesterday.  Discount Di was one of them and she managed to get inside late in the afternoon.  She went looking for a gift… but came out empty handed.  Here’s her take on the sale:

I went to the DVF sale after work looking for a ‘hard to shop for’ friend’s birthday.  I thought maybe a scarf would be nice.  But the ones on display were just not doing it for me.  One was a pretty light yellow and turquoise, but I couldn’t see spending $70 for something I just wasn’t crazy about.  So I decided to check out the racks and racks of dresses.  One thing different from other sample sales I’ve been to is that this one had PLENTY of size 12 and 14.  A bonus for this ‘non size zero’ woman.

There were plenty of classic wrap dresses, silky blouses and fitted skirts on the racks.  The downside was the mob scene I had to fight my way through to get to the line for the dressing room.  I waited and waited and waited with my allotted 10 items until the pounding music and pushing crowds just got too much to take.  I gave up and dropped my loot back on the racks.  I looked at the purses, but $200 for a SMALL leather purse seemed too much.  There were some nice patent leather orange wallets for about $40, but I wasn’t crazy about them. In the end, I went home empty handed and still having to find something for my picky friend.  I tried to convince myself that I never really liked those wrap dresses much anyway.  But that’s not true.  I wish I’d had the patience.  Just get there early if you intend to go to the sale. It WILL take some strength.

If Di can wait to get that gift until later this week… She may find something at this sale when prices will be better and the crowds will likely be less.

    • SampleSally says:

KateM- No word yet on those sales. You may recall, last year’s Alexander Wang sale was in the first week of August so I suspect that it will be held at the same time this year. But I’ll post an alert when I get the news.

I SERIOUSLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY RETAILERS USE 260 FOR SAMPLE SALES
ITS TOO SMALL, CRAMPED, DANGEROUS MOVING RACKS AND THE BLARING MUSIC IS TOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!
WHO ARE THEY APPEALING TO? THIS IS NOT THE GAP OR ABERCROMBIE WITH TWEEN MUSIC
JCREW SALE WAS ACTUALLY DANGEROUS AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY ARE DOING THAT THERE AGAIN
I NEARLY GOT KILLED BY MOVING RACKS
SOME SALESGIRL WHO SHOUDL HAVE BEEN AT THE GAP HIT ME IN THE FACE WITH A HANGER AND LAUGHED
    I NEARLY LOST AN EYE

Because it’s an easy way for designers to sell their surplus…

Personally, I hate 260 5th because they make you check your coat/bag (which always takes FOREVER) and the coat check guys are super sketchy and always hit on me. I just want to shop. Also, their sales usually suck.

    I hate 260
I wasn’t a big fan of clothingline with their surly staff but at least the room was big and open
I agree with crazed. 260 is way too small and those moving clothing racks with protruding feet are OSHA nightmares

The sale is a mess. I was told by different salesgirls to get in different lines for the fitting area. One said the end was over here, and while waiting in that line for 20 mins, another salesgirl came over and yelled at us that the line was over there. I told her that we were getting conflicting information, and she yelled at me that “well now I’m telling you that the line ends there.” some shoppers were getting into arguments with each other because of this confusion. I’m sorry I took time off work to go because I would rather use the lost wages to buy a dress at a higher price and save myself the trouble. Not to mention the selection is lousy — the dresses are there for a reason!

I am upset that JCREW will have their sale at this place WHEN THEY ARE ON NOTICE REGARDING THE DANGEROUS CONDITIONS. I won’t go. At one point, i was in between 2 racks and a person pushed the first rack in, so I was squeezed in between 2 racks of clothing- it was really claustrophobic. When i tried to walk down a line there were women shopping on the rack so you couldn’t pass thru. When i finally made it down one line i nearly killed myself as there were huge silver thing off of each rack which i coulndt see – i went flying! I just think its a super dangerous spot. Why doesn’t jcrew open up their big fat wallets and rent the MET pavilion.

  8. Anna says:

Hi, do you know if the prices are being reduced today? thanks!

    • SampleSally says:

Anna – It’s likely that they will slash prices today.. but I haven’t been down there today. If you’re close by, why not stop in and let the rest of us know…

      • Jen says:

According to the 260 Facebook post, prices have been slashed. However, they did not give any further details about the discount.
