The large space on Mercer Street in Soho was fairly calm this morning as Theory‘s public sale got underway. It was a breeze getting in. No line and no coat or bag check.
Lots of merchandise (clothing, shoes and bags at 70-percent off retail) from the main Theory line, Theyskens’ Theory as well as Helmut Lang. While this is a sale on women’s stuff, I did spot a guy going through the shoes. He appeared to be on the phone with someone, describing the offerings.
This is being called a “sample sale.” But, I didn’t see any actual samples. Mostly stock to be had. Here’s a list of items I spotted:
Theyskens Theory: Jistor shearling jacket $598 ($1995); the Jagat leather jacket $478.50 ($1595); Mici wool coat $298 ($995); Dilliam metallic brocade mini dress $223.50 ($745) Parcos leather pants $345 ($1150); the Yash cashmere cardigan $130.50 ($435).
Theory: A corduroy jacket $136 ($455); Albinibi chunky sweater $127.50 ($425); Teofil sweater $79.50 ($265); Minina C suiting pant $85.50 ($285); Emery pant $79.50 ($265); Alania basic l/s knit $31.50 ($105), Lainnie tank $31.50 ($105), Malory tanks $19.50 ($65).
Helmut Lang: Fur vest $358.50 ($1195); leather vest $358.50 ($1195); fur cardigan $435 ($1450); stretch knit dresses $108 ($360); jersey felt dress $178.50 ($595).
The footwear were mostly Theyskens Theory: Taylor boot $118.50 ($395); Stil Boot $127 ($425); Crop boot $148.50 ($495); flats (same ones from a previous sample sale) tagged at $88.50 ($295).
The dressing rooms can be found in the back of the space. There really was a lot of merchandise so if you can’t make it today, you have another week to check out the sale.

Yes. I really liked the Theysken Theory Jagat black leather cropped jackets which was on sale for $478.
Any good jeans?
Jackie – they had tons of jeans in all sorts of styles, finishes, and colors along a wall. I believe they were around $140-ish before the 70% off discount.

Jillian – I didn’t see that crochet sweater… but I really didn’t look through all of the racks. If anyone saw this sweater, let us know.
This is much better than the sale in December and the prices are probably somewhat lower

S – yes, there were plenty of basic Theory suiting pants and blazers.

Were any of the Theyskens’ bags there?? For how much?
AF – I didn’t see any Theyskens bags. What they had were in bins and didn’t look appealing at all! I really didn’t waste my time looking.
When I was there during the preview day I saw plenty of Theyskens bags — the messengers in navy calf hair in both the large and small sizes. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are gone now. It was 70% off and Barney’s still has it for 60% off:

I thought the bags were a decent deal but otherwise this sale was much worse in terms of merch and much more crowded than the last one where Gilt sold the preview…there was no $20 sample rack this time (where we found Helmut Lang leather leggings in multiple colors!).

Wendy – the sale is over. Check back periodically. There should be another sample sale in the spring.
There is another sample today at 261 W 36th St, 2nd Floor. I preferred the selection at the previous sample sale, although this one did have a lot more merchandise in a lot more sizes and everything was organized by size. No shoes though. I went in looking for “the dress that got away” last time… it was perfect and I wasn’t sure how to wear it so I hesitantly put it down and left – then a week later I saw a photo online, realized how it was meant to be styled and knew what a fool I was to have let it go. Theory is on Gilt as of tomorrow at noon, but not Theyskens’ Theory, sadly.
