Judith Leiber: Deals on Signature Rhinestone-encrusted Handbags

The Judith Leiber sale kicked off this morning at a spacious space on Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron. Each design makes a statement, whether it’s a Hello Kitty minaudière or an evening bag in the shape of a lady bug.   Here you’ll find plenty of the designer’s signature evening clutches embellished with crystals and made of exotic skins, including python, crocodile and ostrich.

The sale is well laid out – clutches, handbags and accessories are neatly placed on tables.  As for prices, minaudière started at $300 (originally $1995).  However, expect to pay 60 percent off retail most items such as  a silver curved minaudière with 19″ chain for $500 (was $2495); fully beaded crystal minaudière for $1,198 (was $2995); a python clutch for $500 (was $1,695); crocodile clutch for $2,678 (was $6695).  In addition, I spotted belts (silk satin and leather) are on sale for $50-$150 ($325-$595) and pillboxes for $60.

Considering the pricey price tags, one customer was shocked to find the crystals on the clutch she picked up to be falling off. Also, some of the tags read: “Made in China.”  A bit surprising and the discovery put a few of us off.

Where/When:  225 Fifth Ave., nr. 26th St.; Sept 14 to 16, Wed–Fri (9–7p), S (10–4p).
