The pop-up space on the Bowery for the multi-brand sample sale was packed with shoppers when I got there after work.
I headed straight for the racks of boho items from Ulla Johnson. Some of which had already been reduced further on this first day of the sale. There were some one-off pieces (sample dresses and tops for $95) and multiples of other styles such as spaghetti-strap flowy long dresses ($225), embroidered tops (from $95 to $170), ponchos ($150), white sailor pants ($50), embroidered jackets ($225).
Maybe because I was looking for easy beach and lounge wear, I was really struck by the pieces from the Montauk-based brand, Surf Bazaar, which was situated at the front of the space. There were $100, $75 and $50 racks. I really liked the light-weight cotton pieces and the quirky color combinations. I thought some of the beach cover-ups could also be used for lounging around at home or even hanging out on low-key weekends. The label’s cotton sweaters ($150) were also standouts.
Towards the back was items from M. Patmos who really known for her great knits. Many of these pieces were from the fall collection. Although it’s now summer, don’t dismiss these. There were actually some great knits and other pieces worth considering. The leather/knit jackets are a steal at $200 and dresses (I spotted a couple of simple, modern, basics) at $100 is not bad. And the sweaters ($100-$125) are also worth checking out.
The Tess Giberson merchandise was against a window – lots of white and black – mostly 50% off retail.
There’s a communal makeshift open area to try things on so dress appropriately. There are two mirrors and shoppers were very accommodating about sharing the space and the mirrors. One problem is there’s no where to place your merchandise so everyone was piling them on the floor.
If you’re in the neighborhood, it’s worth popping in. The sale ends on Friday at 5pm.
Where/When: Open House Gallery, 168 Bowery (at Kenmare). Thru June 26; Thurs 10am-6pm, Fri 10am-5pm.
